First published in 1869, the novel follows Prince Lev Myshkin, a radically compassionate and innocent man who returns to St. Petersburg society after being treated for epilepsy in Switzerland. His pure-hearted honesty and lack of guile lead the cynical, money-driven aristocracy to mistakenly view him as an "idiot". Myshkin's presence acts as a mirror, exposing the greed, moral decay, and nihilism of the people around him as he becomes entangled in a destructive love triangle.
